Why isn’t education on agenda for Parliament, asks PH

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s education committee has questioned why education is excluded as a debate topic during the five-day Parliamentary meeting from July 26.

Headed by former education minister Maszlee Malik, the committee said it was crucial for the public to know the government’s plans on education, including those of the higher education ministry.

So far, the topics scheduled are briefings by ministers on curbing Covid-19, the vaccination rollout, the Emergency and the national recovery plan.

“There are no discussions or debates on education (listed),” Maszlee, now an independent MP, said in a joint statement with six PH MPs.

They are Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PKR-Setiawangsa), Hasan Bahrom (Amanah-Tampin), Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai), Natrah Ismail (PKR-Sekijang), Steven Sim (DAP-Bukit Mertajam) and Rusnah Aluai (PKR-Tangga Batu).

Maszlee said both the higher education and education ministries must submit their plans to the House.

He said MPs should also be given time to ask questions, debate and to give their views as a check and balance of the education system.

“The committee would like to stress that the rakyat have lost confidence in the government as both ministries are seen to have lost direction in managing the country’s education system,” he said.

The lack of discussions on education will only strengthen this view, he added. - FMT
