Faizal pledges to give RM27k of special advisor salary to Covid-19 fund

Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu has pledged to return the salary he received during his short stint as a special advisor to former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the money will go to the Covid-19 fund.

“I want to return all RM27,000 to the Covid-19 fund,” he was reported as saying by Utusan

The former Perak menteri besar said he was not angry nor did he hold it against those who had questioned his salary as the special advisor.

On the contrary, Faizal said he welcomed the issue being raised in Parliament recently for the sake of transparency in the salaries of government members.

However, the Bersatu deputy president expressed disappointment that he was not given the opportunity to explain beforehand that he already had the intention to contribute the money to the Covid-19 fund.

Faizal said on the day he sent a letter to the Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali to channel half his salary to the Covid-19 fund, the Muhyiddin administration had coincidentally fallen on that same day.

“I agree with them, because I had not served much, but received a salary of RM27,000, including the pro-rated (portion), it might be more.

“I intend to return all of what I received to the Covid-19 fund.

“Sorry. To everyone who criticised me, I forgive you. If I have misspoken, I seek your forgiveness. They were not wrong, and I agree with them for raising that issue,” he added.

On Aug 5, Faizal was appointed as a special advisor to Muhyiddin, but 11 days later, Muhyiddin stepped down as prime minister after losing his majority.

Last week, DAP’s Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng had asked Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob in Parliament to reveal the salary received by Faizal in his brief role as PM's special advisor. -Mkini
