PETALING JAYA: Melaka will not open its doors to domestic tourists on Oct 1 as proposed by the tourism, arts and culture ministry, said chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali today.

Instead, he said the state will only do so after 90% of the country’s adult population has been fully vaccinated – which Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday would mean the green light for interstate travel and tourism activities.

“Melaka’s tourism sector will not be opened on Oct 1 as informed by the ministry of tourism, arts and culture on Tuesday,” Sulaiman said, according to a report in Kosmo!

“Tourism in the state will be opened once 90% of Malaysians (adults) have been vaccinated as we do not want what happened in Langkawi (to happen here), where 36 Covid-19 cases were recorded on the second day of its opening to tourists.

“I say ‘no’. We have to be more careful,” he said at the Melaka state assembly sitting.

On Tuesday, tourism, arts and culture minister Nancy Shukri said Melaka, Genting Highlands and Tioman island have been proposed as the next locations for the travel bubble after the successful launch in Langkawi, adding that those areas could open their doors on Oct 1.

She said the ministry was still working on SOPs such as whether travellers need to be swabbed, particularly since it would be hard to keep track of them in large locations like Melaka.

Melaka recorded 292 Covid-19 cases today and there have been a total of 56,025 infections in the state.

Around 80.6% of the state’s adults have been fully vaccinated as of yesterday. - FMT
