Asyraf: Umno grassroots want Muafakat, but it's up to PAS

Umno grassroots are in favour of collaborating with PAS, said Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

However, he said whether that comes to fruition depends on PAS.

"Of course our members are very much expecting that Umno and PAS can remain together.

"But it is all up to PAS (now)," Asyraf (above) told reporters during a press conference at the Umno headquarters today.

In September 2019, Umno and PAS inked an electoral pact known as Muafakat Nasional, holding together during the four subsequent by-elections (Tanjung Piai, Kimanis, Chini and Slim).

However, for the upcoming Malacca legislative assembly election on Nov 20, PAS has committed to participating under the Perikatan Nasional coalition. 

An Umno-PN alliance for the Malacca polls is uncertain because Umno's annual delegates assembly had decided in March that the party was not allowed to collaborate in an electoral pact with Bersatu - PN's lynchpin.

Asyraf said a final decision will be made by the Umno leadership when it meets on Oct 28.

However, he suggested that Umno was prepared to go to the polls without a pact with PAS.

"We have been contesting (without PAS) for the past 60 years as BN.

"On that note, I don't think we have much of a problem," he said. - Mkini
