Idris Haron quartet eyeing to contest Malacca election under Harapan banner

Former Malacca chief minister Idris Haron and three other incumbent state lawmakers are reportedly eyeing to contest in the Malacca snap election under Pakatan Harapan's banner.

This includes two representatives who previously contributed to the collapse of the previous Harapan state government.

In a speech at a Harapan function last night, Idris reportedly said he would leave the quartet's fate up to the coalition.

He then clarified with the media that he was speaking in the context that the four, together with Harapan, made up 15 incumbent assemblypersons - a pact that was big enough to form a state government.

"I place my hopes in Harapan," he was quoted as saying by Malaysia Gazette.

Besides Idris, the quartet consists of incumbent state assemblypersons Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu).

Norhizam was previously with DAP and Noor Effandi was with Bersatu. Both were among those who defected from the Harapan state government last year.

The four later withdrew support from the BN-led Malacca government last month, prompting the state legislative assembly to be dissolved.

Their presence at the Harapan event in Malacca last night was reportedly met with cheers, which Idris took positively.

"When I stood up and got support, I felt like I was starting to be part of the Harapan family.

"There were no insults or boos. There was no accusation of being called traitors from this side. It looks like I'm becoming part of the Harapan family," the incumbent Sungai Udang assemblyperson said.

Idris, however, said he has not decided which Harapan party he would like to join.

However, not all in Harapan were pleased with the quartet being so welcomed with DAP's Low Chee Leong calling it a joke.

Meanwhile, Malacca Harapan chief Adly Zahari reportedly told the media that any decision on letting the four contest under the coalition would be made by the presidential council.

However, he said there has been no discussion on the matter yet.

Nomination day in Malacca is set for Nov 8, with polling on Nov 20. - Mkini
