No decision yet on Malacca polls - Umno

Umno will hold further meetings before deciding its approach on the upcoming Malacca election, said the party’s state chairperson Ab Rauf Yusoh.

He told reporters today that the party has yet to make any decision on the matter.

“I don’t know. There’s no decision yet.

“We will hold another meeting,” he said when asked to comment on the matter following today’s Umno supreme council meeting at Menara Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier, the council had met to decide whether to cooperate with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the state election.

Making preparations

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan

Meanwhile, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the party will make preparations to face the Malacca polls.

“The monthly Umno supreme council meeting today discussed among others the Malacca election.

“The party machinery at every level has been instructed to make thorough preparations to face the state election and follow standard operating procedures to be determined by the Election Commission,” he said in a statement today.

The Pontian MP said the supreme council has also confirmed the termination of Sungai Udang assemblyperson Idris Haron and Pantai Kundor assemblyperson Nor Azman Hassan’s memberships in the party. They were previously attached to the Tangga Batu Umno division.

Previously on Oct 5, Rauf who was also the Malacca state assembly speaker had announced the dissolution of the assembly after Idris, Nor Azman, and two other assemblypersons (one from Bersatu, one independent) withdrew their support for Sulaiman Md Ali as chief minister.

According to the Constitution, an election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution.

No discussion on Umno-PAS cooperation

Ahmad said the party did not discuss cooperation between Umno and PAS during today’s meeting.

“We will inform later. We will discuss in the next meeting,” he said when asked about Umno-PAS cooperation in the upcoming election.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously said on Oct 13 that the party would not cooperate with Bersatu nor PAS in the state election.

Umno and PAS had previously formed the Muafakat Nasional alliance when the two parties were in the opposition.

After the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government, however, PAS joined the Bersatu-led PN without prior discussion with Umno.

Meanwhile, relations between Umno and Bersatu - which was set up by former Umno leaders - remains tense. - Mkini
