PAS still holds out hope for Umno cooperation in Malacca polls

PAS appears to still be holding out hope for possible cooperation with Umno in the upcoming Malacca polls.

PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad said that for now, they would not take Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's dimming views on Muafakat Nasional as his party's official position.

"As of today, the Umno supreme council has not said that (there is no cooperation with PAS).

"So we use the official position. Don't divide us," Idris (above) told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Zahid has stated publicly that the party will not work with Bersatu during the Malacca election but is vague about PAS.

He had said that he "did not see a bright light" for Muafakat to manifest itself at the Malacca election.

He added that Umno had been betrayed repeatedly in the pact.

However, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan has hinted that party deputy president Mohamad Hasan has a different view on cooperation with PAS.

Muafakat is a political pact between Umno and PAS which Zahid brokered in 2019.

The pact saw Umno and PAS successfully working together in several by-elections. However, the pact became less prominent after the events of March 2020 which saw Muhyiddin Yassin being appointed prime minister.

Following this, PAS joined the Perikatan Nasional coalition. Its commitment to Muafakat has since become unclear.
