Timah whiskey - A desperate attack against PAS, says Tuan Ibrahim

The act of certain quarters linking PAS to the production of locally made Timah whiskey is a desperate move to attack the party, said PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

“Actually it is not a big issue, except they don’t have any capital to attack PAS,” he said, as reported by the party’s mouthpiece Harakah Daily.

He said the accusations against his party were clearly against PAS’ basic principles which are to oppose anything "wicked".

Tuan Ibrahim added that the responsibility to oppose wicked things is not just the duty of PAS but of every Muslim individual.

The Kubang Kerian MP also said it is better for the Muslim community to be taught to stay away from alcohol regardless of brand.

However, at the same time, he said the rights and wishes of non-Muslims to drink alcohol should also be taken into account.

'There are no men named Timah'

The environment and water minister also said the brand and logo of Timah whiskey is indeed confusing and should be reviewed.

“The name Timah. It is not an Islamic name and it is not a human name. It is the name of a metal, and it is even clearer when the logo of the liquor is a picture of a man. There are no men named Timah,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Idris Ahmad said those involved should avoid naming an alcoholic brand something provocative or confusing.

“Liquor is haram, no matter what the name is,” he said.

Idris, who is also PAS vice-president, said the party disagrees with the production of alcohol, let alone one using such a name as its brand.

He said PAS realises the product is targeted at non-Muslims but they question the motive of choosing such a name.

“What did they mean by using that name? Is it to create a new form of normalisation, that is what we are worried about,” he said.

Idris was speaking to the media after attending a Maulidur Rasul event in Kuala Lumpur today. - Mkini
