Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's health has improved well enough for him to be moved to a normal ward from the coronary care unit (CCU) at the National Heart Institute (IJN), said his daughter Marina Mahathir.
“He is cheerful and spirited about recovering fully,” she said in a statement today.
Marina, who is a social activist, said both Mahathir and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali are still not allowed to receive visitors, in order to prevent infection.
“Once again, he and his whole family would like to thank everyone who has prayed for him to fully recover,” she said.
Mahathir was admitted to IJN on Jan 20 but the circumstances surrounding his latest hospitalisation remain unclear.
This is the third time he has been admitted to IJN within a month.
Mahathir’s family had been providing near-daily updates on his recovery since last Saturday.
The Pejuang chairperson – who will turn 97 in July – was admitted to IJN for a full medical check-up and further observation last Dec 16 and spent a week there before being discharged on Dec 23.
He was subsequently admitted to IJN for an elective procedure on Jan 7 and was discharged on Jan 13. - Mkini
