KUALA LUMPUR: The 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma), postponed two years ago because of the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held from Sept 29-Oct 8 this year in the Klang Valley.

The National Sports Council (NSC) said in a statement that the Games, to be known as ‘SUKMA XX, NSC 2022’, would involve 16 compulsory sports and 15 optional sports, and two demonstration sports – silambam and kabaddi.

The statement said the Sukma supreme committee meeting today also agreed to maintain the rules and regulations on age limits that had been agreed earlier.

However, the exact number of events to be contested is subject to the minimum number of entries of eight states for each sport and will be decided by the Sukma technical committee later.

The Sukma Para Games will be held from Oct 29 to Nov 6.

The 20th Sukma was supposed to have been held in Johor from March 6-14, 2020. It was postponed several times because of the pandemic before it was agreed that the NSC would host the games in the Klang Valley.

Following the decision, several parties urged the organisers to raise the age limit to 23 compared to 21 and below, as athletes had begun making preparations long before the pandemic struck.

The next Sukma will be held in 2024 and hosted by Johor. - FMT
