KUALA LUMPUR: Defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein has dismissed claims that Umno ministers are not performing in government.
He pointed out that the party’s convincing wins in the Melaka and Johor state elections were in part due to the good work of Umno ministers at the federal level.
“I feel that the party would not have done so well in the two state elections if our ministers are not performing. Our (Umno’s) performance in those elections was also based on our success in the government,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Umno general assembly at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.
Apart from Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is an Umno vice-president, Umno has nine ministers in the Cabinet.
Hishammuddin also questioned how his performance differed from that of his predecessors, namely Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Najib Razak.
“How am I not performing as the defence minister? What’s the difference between me and the work done by previous defence ministers, including my own party president (Zahid) and Datuk Seri Najib?” he asked.
He urged anyone making such claims to heed Zahid’s call at today’s general assembly for better cooperation between the government and party members, especially among members of the party’s Supreme Council and the Cabinet.
Hishammuddin was believed to be referring to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hassan’s speech to the party’s Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings at the opening of the Umno general assembly on Wednesday night.
Mohamad was reported to have said that Umno’s performance in the government did not elicit as much confidence as hoped.
Rural development minister Mahdzir Khalid and communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa have also commented on the issue, with both stating that it was unfair for Mohamad to pass such judgment when he was not part of the government.
Mahdzir is an Umno vice-president and Annuar is the Ketereh Umno division chief. - FMT
