Former Umno election director Tajuddin Abdul Rahman warned that proposing the dissolution of Parliament to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not as easy as one might think.
According to him, Umno may put in a request to their representatives in the federal government to propose the initial steps of implementing the general election.
However, in the end, Tajuddin (above) said, the final decision is with the Agong.
“As stated in the Constitution, advising the Agong is not only the prime minister’s, (but) is a cabinet decision.
“The prime minister brings (the proposal) to the cabinet, if the cabinet agrees only then they can bring it before the Agong.
“If the cabinet does not agree, there is nothing the prime minister can bring to the Agong,” he told reporters at the World Trade Center Kuala Lumpur today.
A number of Umno leaders have been pushing for Parliament to be dissolved and have urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to do it on several occasions.
Ismail Sabri is one of Umno’s three vice presidents.
Agong has the power
There are groups within the party that think it is not an appropriate time to hold the 15th general election (GE15).
Tajuddin also said if the cabinet agreed to advise the dissolution of Parliament, the Agong still has the power to accept or reject the proposal.
The Umno supreme council member added that his party will not know if GE15 can be held based on their will.
“We can only try, urge, and suggest,” he said.
Tajuddin also said some members thought it would be better for Umno to just focus on servicing the rakyat. - Mkini
