Malaysian PM and ex-PM to address 27th Nikkei conference

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be addressing the 27th International Conference on the Future of Asia on May 25 and May 26 respectively.

This is Ismail Sabri's first appearance at the conference, better known as the Nikkei conference, as it is organised annually by the eponymous Japanese business media giant.

On the other hand, Mahathir, 96, has made regular appearances since the inaugural Nikkei conference in 1995.

This year's conference is themed "Redefining Asia’s role in a divided world".

Other speakers include Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed.

Ismail Sabri arrived in Japan yesterday, marking his first official visit to the country.

Investing in Malaysia

He is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and businesses that are interested in investing in Malaysia.

Ismail Sabri is accompanied by Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali, Human Resources Minister M Saravanan, Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Faizal Azumu and the Prime Minister's Special Envoy to East Asia Richard Riot Jaem.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said the visit reflects the importance of Malaysia-Japan relations as both countries commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy this year.

In 2021, Japan was Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner with trade valued at about RM149 billion. As of 2021, Japan is Malaysia's third-largest foreign investor in the manufacturing sector for implemented projects valued at about RM90.9 billion.

Wisma Putra said Malaysia and Japan will ink a memorandum of cooperation in three areas, involving the aircraft industry, skilled workers as well as youth and sports, during the visit. - Mkini
