PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the Pakatan Harapan-led (PH) government could not carry out reforms fully as it was led by a “non-reformist” leader.
He said Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in his stint as the seventh prime minister, had returned to racial politics which ran contrary to PH’s multiracial agenda.
“We (PH) did undertake some measures, reforms, but it was half-hearted because the leader of this so-called reform government was not a reformer.
“He does not believe in reform,” Anwar said at a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) in Bangkok.
After becoming prime minister a second time, he said, Mahathir returned to politics with strong racial overtones, including attending a Malay congress that harped on Malay supremacy.
Anwar was asked what it would take for PH to win the next general election (GE15), since Mahathir was no longer with the coalition.
Anwar said he remained optimistic about PH’s chances going into GE15, citing disunity within the ruling coalition as shown by the feud between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin. - FMT
