Govt and TV3 told to come clean if politics behind 'takbir raya' axing

Perikatan Nasional has demanded the government and TV3 to come clean on the reasons for the opposition coalition’s takbir raya being cancelled at the eleventh hour.

PN deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan (above) claimed that TV3 cited “technical problems”, which he termed as “odd and unacceptable”.

"Therefore, PN urges the management of TV3 and the federal government, particularly the Communications and Digital Ministry, to come clean on this issue and deny that there was any political interference to prevent the video from being aired.

"The integrity of TV3 and the ministry depends on their readiness to be transparent and professional, especially in honouring contracts and promises that have been agreed upon formally," he added in a statement.

It was reported that PN had secured a five-minute slot on TV3 for its takbir raya - the reciting of the takbir to mark Aidilfitri - to be aired on the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri on Friday.

A source at TV3 told Malaysiakini that PN paid for the slot, which was scheduled for 10.20pm that day.

The opposition coalition had already promoted the occasion on its social media channels but when the appointed time came, a TV3 online livestream instead aired a drama along with a series of commercial advertisements, including a Hari Raya Aidilfitri greeting from Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Takiyuddin also expressed PN's disappointment over the incident, saying that it was "unprofessional" and not supposed to happen, especially when it comes to renowned television stations like TV3.

"In its email sent to us about five minutes before the scheduled time, TV3 said the cancellation was due to 'technical problems' and promised to give us a refund.

"However, as TV3 is a renowned and veteran broadcaster, PN believed this incident should not have happened. Using technical problems as an excuse was also very odd and unacceptable." - Mkini
