Johor police said that the victim transferred RM1,140,320 to the account provided by ‘Inspector Harun’ for apparent investigation purposes.

PETALING JAYA
A company director lost over RM1 million in a scam involving an individual posing as a police officer named “Inspector Harun”.

Johor police chief M Kumar said the police received a report yesterday from a 37-year-old local woman who claimed she was deceived through a phone call.

According to Kumar, the victim said that she was initially contacted by someone claiming to represent a delivery company around 3pm on Oct 31.

“The individual, who introduced himself as a delivery company representative, then informed the victim of a package allegedly containing a chequebook and a bank token, that was addressed to her,” he said in a statement last night.

“When the victim denied making any such request, the call was transferred to a supposed police officer for her to file a denial report.”

Kumar said “Inspector Harun” claimed that the victim’s credit card was linked to a fraud case and told her to transfer funds to another account for a Bank Negara Malaysia investigation.

“Fearing legal consequences, the victim transferred a total of RM1,140,320 to the bank account provided by the supposed police officer.

“She only realised she had been scammed when asked to transfer additional funds, despite having already transferred a significant amount. This prompted her to file a police report,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

In light of the incident, Kumar urged the public to remain vigilant when receiving calls from individuals claiming to be police officers or representatives of enforcement agencies.

“Authorities will never instruct anyone to transfer funds to a bank account under the pretext of an investigation,” he added. - FMT
