'Don't just harp on korban, what about other faiths?'

Former mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said while he agrees that schools are not appropriate venues for the Aidiladha cow sacrifice ritual, other religious acts in public places  should also be similarly regulated.

NONE"Basically, the school is not a place for (animal) sacrifice and may not be suitable for some students.

"However, in this country there are many more things that are not suitable and abuse public spaces," he said in aFacebook posting.

"Among these, roads are not places for religious processions such as carrying idols and smashing of coconuts to the point of inconveniencing road users or messing up a public space, such as being carried out by followers of certain religions.

"If you want to streamline (the regulations), then do it for all," he wrote.

He was responding on the outcry from some non-Muslims over theslaughter of cows at SK Puchong Jaya in Selangor during Aidiladha last week.

NONENon-Muslimparents in particular felt holding the korban in the school was insensitive as the cow is considered sacred to Hindus and some Buddhists.

Deputy Education Minister II P Kamalanathan said today such a practice was in factnever permitted in schools, and that SK Puchong Jaya had failed to notify the Education Department about the matter.

However, the headmaster of SK Puchong Jaya in Selangor remainsadamant, according to a voice recording of a conversation with him that a man known only as ‘Saravanan’ uploaded on YouTube last week.

The headmaster, Mohd Amin Bahari, maintained that non-Muslims in the school were informed ahead of time so that they could avoid witnessing the ceremony and that it had no intention of offending non-Muslims.

Mohd Amin has since lodged a police report against Saravanan, in which he says he fears for his safety.
