Anwar suit settlement 'twisted', says Chandra

International Movement for a Just World (Just International) chairperson Chandra Muzaffar has claimed that “irresponsible quarters” have “twisted” the settlement over the defamation suit against him by PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

In a statement, Chandra said that Anwar on March 6, 2008 had sued him for defamation over three things Chandra had said at a forum.

However, in Jan 2013, Anwar (left) dropped the first two claims in the defamation suit, that is Chandra's statements that it would be “disastrous” if Anwar became prime minister and that Anwar had lied to Malaysians.

“Because he (Anwar) had dropped the first two claims, I had agreed on on Jan 7 to retract the last claim in the suit regarding the bell incident at Kampung Rawa.

“Anwar, through his lawyer, also agreed that he is not seeking any costs, remedies or an apology from me,” he said, of the settlement which ended the case which lasted six years.

In forwarding the statement, a Just International official also said that Malaysiakini's reporting of the settlement yesterday was “less balanced” and that “comments from readers were totally unfair”.

The portal reported that the Kuala Lumpur High Court recorded a consent judgment between the two which concluded Anwar's RM10 million defamation suit over a news report entitled 'Disaster if Anwar is PM' published in 2008 before the 12th general election.

Chandra, a former PKR deputy president, had claimed that “Anwar in his dealings with Kampung Rawa clash between Hindus and Indian Muslims in Penang had said that he would make sure the temple bell would not ring in the country any more if his dictum was not accepted.”
