New threat, so Sanjeevan wants protection

Anti-crime activist R Sri Sanjeevan, who was shot at last July, is asking for police protection after receiving a fresh death threat.

Sanjeevan, accompanied by Batu MP Tian Chua, submitted a memorandum for Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar (left) at the Bukit Aman police headquarters this morning.

"I want the police to give us protection, including for my family," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Yesterday, Sanjeevan received a text message in Tamil with the sender threatening to kill him. He later lodged a police report at the Jempol police district headquarters in Negri Sembilan.

In the memorandum submitted today, Sanjeevan said he urged police to investigate the threat as well as the one that preceded the attempt on his life last year.

"Last year when I received a death threat, the police never investigated it and later I got shot.

"Now I'm getting another death threat and if I get shot again they (police) may just try to wash their hands off," he said.

'No closure for assassination attempt'

Sanjeevan said despite the Criminal Investigation Department director Hadi Ho Abdullah being tasked with leading the probe into the assassination attempt, there had been no outcome in the last six months.

He said he believed the death threat this time, like the last, was in relation to his threats to expose cops involved in drugs and illegal gambling syndicates.

In last year's July 27 incident, a motorcyclistopened fire on Sanjeevan as he was traveling in his vehicle at Jempol.

A bullet penetrated both his lungs, leaving  him in a month-long  coma

On the same day of the shooting, Sanjeevan had posted on Twitter claiming that a rogue cop had asked a local syndicate in Negeri Sembilan to gun him down.
