Pro-Umno protesters charged with trespassing

The 14 pro-Umno supporters who barged into the Penang legislative assembly last month were charged with trespassing in a magistrate’s court today.

They claimed trial to the charge under Section 448 of the Penal Code for trespassing into the state assembly on May 21 in search of DAP Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer.

The 14 were released on bail of RM2,000 each and magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit fixed July 22 for mention of the case.

State prosecution unit chief Razali Che Ani handled the prosecution while Abu Bakar AS Sidek and Wan Nazri Othman appeared for the men.

The 14 were accompanied by their supporters who filled up the courtroom, while police told members of the media to leave the courtroom.

The 14 are members of the state Umno Youth, Perkasa and the Federation of Peninsula Malay Students.

During the incident last month, the group wanted Rayer to retract and apologise for the words "Umno celaka" (Umno be damned) that he uttered in the state assembly on May 20.

Rayer was yesterday arrested for sedition for uttering the remark and released on police bail.

He was due to be charged today, under Section 4 (1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, for uttering seditious words in the state legislative assembly. However, the matter was put off on the orders of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, pending further notice.
