IPOH - Residents are fuming over the state government's decision to take over a portion of the Hindu burial ground land in Buntong here which had been gazetted in 1919.
The de-gazetting notice was posted at the cemetery three days ago Buntong assemblyman A. Sivasubramaniam said.
"We are in the dark about the notice ... no prior announcement had been made, the residents as stakeholders need to know what is the status of the land and the reason behind the move," he said after leading a group of 60 residents to present protest memorandum to the land office here today.
He said the loved ones of the residents were buried there and is a sensitive issue for the Indian community.
The burial ground is managed by the Ipoh Hindu Devastana Paripalana Sabha (committee) and is more than 100 years old.
Apart from burial, there was also the traditional cremation at the same area.
However, the burial ground has now been closed as a modern crematorium is to be built on the same site at a cost of RM1.3 million by the state government.
