No interference in 1MDB probe, AG reiterates

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali reiterated today that there is no interference in the investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Asked about Malaysian Bar president Steven Thiru's concern over the independence of the investigations into the sovereign fund following alleged interference and attacks on institutions investigating it, Apandi said what is stated is not based on facts.
“It is relying on the wrong facts. Firstly, there was never any interference in the investigations into 1MDB.
“The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was investigated following a leakage of information. It is being investigated as there is a complaint of leakage and it is not to prevent the MACC from investigating.
“This is where there is a conflict of facts. I am aware of this as the police wanted to investigate the leakage and that is why the police came in,” Apandi said.
He said the people should not construe this as interference and he could not reveal anything further on this matter.
No deadline for decision
The AG also said there is no deadline set for him to make a decision on the three investigation papers the MACC handed to his office on Dec 31.
“I will study them. Bear in mind that they have collected evidence from more than 100 witnesses.
“I have to go through the evidence thoroughly. I will go through the evidence with a fine-tooth comb,” Apandi said.
On Dec 31, MACC announced it had submitted three investigation papers to the AG – two papers related to the probe on SRC International and another on the RM2.6 billion political donation.
The RM2.6 billion issue first emerged in July last year when The Wall Street Journal reported that the money was channelled into Prime Minister Najib AQbdul Razak's personal bank accounts.
Also finding its way into Najib's accounts, the report claimed, was RM42 million that supposedly originated from SRC International.
Najib has denied any wrongdoing in relation to these funds and in an announcement on Dec 31 last year, he proudly related that 1MDB has already entered into agreements that will see its debts reduced by about RM40.4 billion. -Mkini
