All in the hope of receiving a better education.

But with the upcoming hike in school fees for both permanent residents (PRs) and foreigners in Singapore, and the weakened ringgit, Johor’s State Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat says that the commute is not necessary.

“Johor has more than enough public, private or international schools that offer quality education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels“, Ayub told the Star.

He added: “We have a total of 16 international schools offering primary and secondary education throughout the state, most of which are located in the Iskandar Malaysia region”.

The fee hike has also impacted school van providers who said  the number of students travelling between Johor and Singapore has dropped by 15% in recent years, according to a Malay Mail Online report.

With the wide range of international syllabus to choose from, and nine institutions where students can pursue their tertiary education at EduCity located in Iskandar Malaysia, Ayub believes that the education opportunities in Malaysia are more than adequate.

From 2018 to 2020, school fees in Singapore will increase by $25 to $60 a month for PRs, and by $25 to $150 a month for international students, the Straits Times reports.

And this increase will go into effect by next year.
