PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has hit out at Pakatan Harapan, accusing the ruling coalition of raising racial controversies and then putting the blame on Umno and Barisan Nasional.
In a Facebook post, the former prime minister cited increasing racial sentiments and political uncertainty as among the five risks faced by the country today.
He cited several issues where members of PH or its leaders contradicted one another, like the introduction of khat (Jawi script).
“The one who introduces khat is the PH government, the ones who object to khat are DAP and PKR. The one who called Dong Zong racist and wants to outlaw it is the 7th PM (Dr Mahathir Mohamad), the ones who defend Dong Zong are DAP and PKR.”
He also said it was Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman who objected to controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik only to support the Indian national later on.
Syed Saddiq had called for Naik to be deported for reportedly saying Malaysian Chinese could be considered as guests but later urged Malaysians to “move on” after Mahathir ruled out Naik’s deportation.
“The PH government wants to blame Umno and BN for raising (racial) issues when it is they who are always raising racial controversies.
“It is as if the 1Malaysia spirit, the spirit of unity between (different) races and religions, doesn’t exist any more,” he said, adding that scandals implicating PH leaders and infighting within the coalition contributed to political instability in the country.
The other four risks faced by the country, Najib said, were the risk of sanctions or tariffs on Malaysian goods by the US, the price of crude oil dropping below US$30 per barrel, the increase in government debt, and inaccurate narratives on the economy.
He said the US has listed Malaysia as one of nine countries in its currency manipulator list, while an over-reliance on oil, more so after the goods and services tax (GST) was abolished, could spell trouble for the country if the global price of oil dropped below US$30.
On the nation’s debt, Najib said the government’s debt to GDP ratio limit stood at 55% and that in the first quarter of 2018, this stood at 48.7%.
“But this ratio has increased every quarter and now stands at 52.7% at the end of the second quarter and is expected to reach 53% by the end of the year.”
He said that false narratives, including on the country’s RM1 trillion debt, the “missing” GST refunds and the inclusion of disposed of assets as direct foreign investments could cause doubt among investors. - FMT
