KOTA KINABALU: Ten prison wardens were charged with murder of an inmate at a central prison here at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (Oct 29).
The accused are Barry Jipmon, Mohd Dzulfikri Mohd Safri, Farizan Mokri, Mohd Saiful Saidin, Amran Yasik, Ab Mutalib @ Talib Abd Rasul, Zerry Maidin, Tomy Momoh, Shahryll Nazry Wan Sofian and Muhammad Fazi Lakui, aged between 25 and 40.
According to the charge sheet, the accused with collective intent on Oct 4 this year, committed murder by causing the death of Shainal Mukhtar, 36, at Blok Gemilang cell in the Kota Kinabalu Central Prison, an offence punishable under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death sentence.
No plea was taken during the session as the case is being transferred to the High Court.
State prosecution director Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim, who led the prosecution team, requested for another date for mention pending the chemist and forensics reports.
There was no objection by the defence counsel team led by P.J. Pereira.
Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles fixed Nov 25 for the next mention.
It was reported that the prisoner who had been in jail for the past two years, was found unconscious in his cell.
A post-mortem found that the inmate died due to blunt trauma to the head, and there were also bruises visible on his head and body.
The 10 prison wardens were then hauled in by the police for investigations. - Star
