KUCHING: Sarawak Pay, the state’s mobile app for cashless payments, will go global as S-Pay next month, Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said today.
He said Sarawak Pay will collaborate with UnionPay, which is international, and can be used anywhere UnionPay is accepted from November.
“We want to make use of our mobile app for cashless payments in other countries like China, instead of confining it to Sarawak,” he told reporters, adding that Sarawak Pay will be rebranded as S-Pay to give it international appeal.
Sarawak Pay was launched by the state government in 2017 as part of efforts to introduce a digital economy.
It enables payments through an electronic wallet (e-wallet), by credit card and online banking and has a “scan and pay” feature that facilitates payment by scanning a QR code on a bill or displayed by a retailer.
Abang Johari said there are currently about 100,000 Sarawak Pay users in the state. - FMT
