Former premier Najib Abdul Razak has taken a swipe at Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders harping on the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government's recent series of political appointments to head government entities and government-linked companies.
Unlike PN, Najib (photo) claimed that Harapan had prior to its victory in the 2018 14th general election made a written promise to end all political appointments.
"It was PH that promised there will be no political appointments if they win.
"It was PH that broke their own promise with a line-up of political appointments," said Najib.
In his Facebook post, Najib had shared several news reports quoting Pakatan leaders, including former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who after coming into power said political appointments of qualified individuals will continue under Harapan.
Aside from Mahathir, Najib shared a news headline from last October that quoted former deputy minister Sivarasa Rasiah as saying Harapan "never promised" to end political appointments.
Similarly, Najib pointed out how Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir had also defended the move, reportedly arguing that political appointments "should be viewed positively".
"Finally (now) PH is asking PN to fulfil the promise which they had broken. You think?" Najib said sarcastically.
In a separate post, Najib further claimed that Harapan's appointment of DAP chairperson Tan Kok Wai (below) as Malaysia's special envoy to China is yet another example of its broken promise.
Tan in an interview with Malaysiakini, not long after the downfall of Harapan's administration, said that its members and leaders will not quit their position in regulatory bodies parked under all levels of government.
Contrary to Najib's latest claims, Harapan under Promise 22 its GE14 election manifesto only stated that the "government will ensure the appointment of state and national GLC Board members will be made based on merit and professionalism, not based on politics."
The Buku Harapan document made no mention of eliminating political appointments in other positions.
The latest scrutiny surrounding political appointments in government follows speculations that various professionals heading GLCs and government-linked entities would be replaced by PN politicians.
Among others, Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan was appointed as Malaysian Palm Oil Board chairperson to replace industry veteran Bakke Mohd Salleh who was reportedly instructed by the government to vacate his position.
It was also reported yesterday that All MPs who do not presently hold positions in government will be made heads of GLCs, according to PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, who is also the de facto law minister. - Mkini

ReplyDeletePolitical appointments are positive when being properly scrutinize by the oposition. So now that PH MPs are the oppositions, just do you work diligently and stop being cry babies and focus on being a good watch dog.
