26 people evacuated after flash floods hit village in Skudai

JOHOR BARU: A total of 26 people from seven families at Kampung Laut near Batu 10 in Skudai here have been relocated to a temporary relief centre at SK Batu 10 after their houses were inundated.

Skudai Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Riduan Akhyar said the department received a distress call at 12.37pm on Friday (Jan 1).

A team of 11 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) were deployed to the location.

“Floodwaters rose about two feet and we ordered all villagers to move out from their homes, ” he said in a statement.

He added that the rescue operation ended at about 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, the Kluang Civil Defence Force in a statement said that flash floods also occurred in Kahang involving three areas namely Yap Tau Sah residential area, Kampung Contoh and Kampung Palembang.

“Several roads were also inundated namely Jalan Kluang - Mersing, Jalan Mengkibol - Rengam, and Jalan Batu 4 - Mersing.

“The cause of the floods is due to the continuous rain from morning, ” it said, adding that the water level has started to recede and constant surveillance in the area will be conducted. - Star
