Give us chance to solve your problems, DPM tells contract doctors

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today urged government contract doctors to give him and the high-level committee set up recently the chance to solve their woes.

Speaking at a presser this evening, he said there is a need to develop a new employment scheme to help the group.

"I have formed a high-level committee that involves not only the Health Ministry but also other agencies including the Public Service Department, the Public Service Commission and several others.

"Discussions have to be done to finalise a new scheme, which has to be developed so we can help the contract doctors, whom I believe must be defended.

"And this must be done through methods and government service schemes," he told reporters at the press conference held during a breaking of fast event in Kuala Lumpur.

Zahid was responding to a question on talks about contract doctors planning to go on a strike nationwide, between April 3 and 5.

According to the deputy prime minister, the federal administration has discussed several proposals on making the contract doctors permanent government employees and the committee would discuss several new work schemes.

"So I hope they will give a chance to me, who has just been appointed as the chair of this high-level committee, to solve the problem in the near future.

"InshaAllah, there is no problem that we cannot discuss and solve," he said.

Yesterday, Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa announced that the government has agreed to form a high-level committee to discuss the long-standing issue concerning contract doctors.

This comes amid rumours that healthcare workers might strike between April 3 and 5, with the DoctorsMalaysia Instagram page urging contract doctors nationwide to join the strike or resign en masse on April 1.

The Health Ministry had earlier posted a reminder that civil servants are forbidden to join “illegal” gatherings as per a 2011 flier issued by the Public Service Department. - Mkini
