No campaign elements in KKB Hari Raya open house - Selangor MB tells Bersih

The Selangor menteri besar has denied electoral watchdog Bersih’s claim that his administration committed election offences by holding a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Kuala Kubu Baharu yesterday.

Amirudin Shari assured there were no elements of campaigning during the event.

"There was no campaigning during the programme, but if people (event attendees) who came from afar wore political party-themed T-shirts to the event, I can't stop them.

“Can I ask them to go back and change into different clothes?

"In fact, the programme was open to all, and in my speech, I even invited the opposition to attend, as it is a Hari Raya event," he told reporters after the open house last night.

It was a coincidence that the location of the open house was in Kuala Kubu Baharu as the state government's events are held on a rotational basis and it was the constituency’s turn, he explained.

"Previously, Chinese New Year open houses were held in Sepang and Dengkil," he added.

‘Duit raya’ cancelled

Amirudin said the agenda to give “duit raya” to the event attendees was also cancelled, despite being listed in the invite.

This was to avoid prejudice following Bersih's reprimand, he added.

"We received advice and feedback, and we don't want people to say bad things, so the decision (to cancel giving the money) was taken.

"As I said earlier, we listen to feedback from all parties."

Recently, the electoral watchdog alleged that the Selangor state government had committed election offences by holding the open house in Kuala Kubu Baharu and listing “duit raya” gifting as part of the agenda. - Mkini
