Suspect in assault of sports journo Haresh Deol to be charged today

KUALA LUMPUR: The suspect arrested in connection with the assault on veteran journalist Haresh Deol in Bangsar earlier this week is expected to be charged in court today.

The 37-year-old man will be brought before a magistrate to face charges under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

The offences carry jail terms of up to one and two years respectively, or fines, or both.

Yesterday, city police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the assault may have stemmed from a personal dispute involving the suspect's wife and that the attackers may have mistaken Haresh for someone else.

Fadil also confirmed that the suspect has a criminal record for several prior offences.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Haresh, who is also National Press Club deputy president and founder of Kuala Lumpur-based news organisation Twentytwo13, was attacked by two men clad in black in Bangsar.

Since then, the attack has been widely condemned, including by Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm), the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). - NST
