Bersatu supreme council member urges Muhyiddin to resign, backs Hamzah as acting president

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bersatu supreme council member has urged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down as party president and allow deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin to take over in an acting capacity.

Yunus Nurdin said Muhyiddin's resignation was necessary to resolve the ongoing turmoil and confusion within Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN), echoing similar calls made by other supreme council members.

"As emphasised previously, the supreme council denies any claims that matters discussed by Muhyiddin with Pas leaders were ever brought, discussed, or agreed upon in any official meeting, including the alleged proposal to abolish the PN chairman post," he said in a statement today.

Yunus, who is also the Libaran Bersatu division chief, said such unilateral actions and statements had created political confusion, eroded internal trust, and threatened strategic ties within PN.

He added that the current internal crisis required mature and credible leadership capable of uniting the coalition through principled discipline.

Yunus described Hamzah as the most qualified figure to assume the role, citing his experience and political wisdom in resolving internal conflicts and strengthening party structures.

"Hamzah is seen as a leader with the experience to rebuild internal trust and restore strategic relationships within PN in a more organised and disciplined manner for long-term stability," he said.

He further suggested that Muhyiddin should focus on his ongoing legal challenges, specifically the Jana Wibawa case, which is scheduled for mention in March.

"This is to ensure that the party leadership and coalition management are no longer burdened by prolonged controversy and polemics," he said.

Yunus stressed that PN must be built as a solid and stable coalition to gain public confidence ahead of the 16th General Election, rather than one plagued by leadership conflicts and internal trust crises.

"Bersatu and PN will only remain relevant as an alternative for national leadership if the coalition is anchored by integrity, clear direction, collective decisions, and true unity, rather than perception politics and unilateral actions," he said. - NST
