A PHOTO of opposition leader and former member of Bersatu Hamzah Zainuddin, with PAS leaders hours after his firing from the party, is now the centre of attention. Political analyst James Chin wondered whether Hamzah is set to join PAS after his dismissal.
Calling PAS the Moon Party, Chin speculates that while PAS wants Hamzah to take over PN and Bersatu as leader, it is Hamzah’s hesitation that brought himself into the current mess.
“I have consistently said Moon wants Hamzah to take over. Hamzah was supposed to challenge Moo for the presidency in the last round, but at the last minute decided not to,” he said.
According to him, Azmin Ali was brought in by Muhyiddin Yassin to balance Hamzah’s influence. Nevertheless, Chin believes PAS will continue backing Hamzah despite the fact that he is now an independent Member of Parliament.
He also speculates that PAS would want Hamzah to join the party, but there may be legal wranglings that would prevent this from happening.
“The good news for Hamzah is that he can expect support from at least 11 Bersatu YB. That is about half of the current Bersatu YB,” he pointed out.
“Let’s wait-and-see for the next 48 hours. The key role will be played by the Speaker if Bersatu formally writes to the Speaker. Will Bersatu write the letter?” he asked. —Focus Malaysia
