FT dept studying mayoral election for KL - Yeoh
KL mayor polls: Umno froths, S'gor PAS Youth wants rational dialogue
Don't be afraid of research,' Yeoh says amid backlash on KL mayor polls study
BluePanther4725: Electoral reform is one of Pakatan Harapan’s promises, and it has been long overdue. It’s good that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh is looking into it now. It’s better late than never.
No doubt she will encounter strong opposition from Umno, which uses race as an excuse to justify corruption. Yeoh must be strong and not bow to the pressure from Umno detractors. She must do the right thing.
BlackSwan: It is extremely important that elected (and publicly accountable) people run this city.
Here’s an idea for Yeoh. Remove political parties from the equation. Start from the grassroots and flow the elections all the way to the mayor.
Other than local residency, the other rule is that you are not allowed to be elected if you are active in politics (definition can be discussed).
And zero campaigning by political parties or even by individuals. Just let locals elect their neighbours whom they know well. And flow it upwards.
VoteOfOne: An election is a referendum seeking the views of the people. Umno may never want that if they can have their way.
Umno leaders are showing their covetous creed. They just want position, power, and money in urban areas to be given to them because they represent all the princes of the land.
None want to put their ounce of effort into tilling a square inch of soil, just demand because they are entitled. If the area in question were located in some backwater city or town, there would be no contenders; no noise.
OrangePanther1466: Why can’t we treat the federal territories as another state with a state assembly, which will elect amongst them the mayor (menteri besar equivalent)?
This will avoid any apprehensions expressed by Umno. This will also enable the residents of the federal territories to have appropriate representation.
This proposal will not upset parliamentary representation, as there are already MPs representing the federal territories.
Yeoh should instead ask her people to study this proposal.
Business First: It is odd that none of the persons complaining hold any seats in Kuala Lumpur.
Despite not having any constituents to represent, they purport to speak up for Kuala Lumpur folks to oppose this, when so far, I have not heard anyone in the city disagreeing with more accountability.
Maybe leave it to the Kuala Lumpur MPs to voice any concerns since they are the elected representatives of the people who will be affected.
Leave politics aside, especially racial ones.
UB40: The majority of Kuala Lumpur residents are made up of mixed races. Let them be represented by all races. We never know, it will improve and give a better quality of life, plus no more power for officers to behave like little Napoleons.
Abuse and corruption will be eradicated. Why not? We need elections for mayor in all municipalities.

Meerkat: Yeoh is way ahead of the average Malaysian politician, even the so-called leading lights. Unfortunately, such talent may not be really appreciated in government.
It is good that she takes a stand. She will be remembered for it, and if the government does not value and support it, it would be a good time for her to devote her efforts to more deserving purposes.
Malaysia seems to want hardworking and honest ministers. The pushback comes from people who are unable to get ahead without crutches and, therefore, fear objective assessments.
They are also the same people who instantly see every decision through a racial lens. They are not aware that lifting up the whole country also improves their own lot, or they have a dog-in-the-manger attitude.
They fear having to curtail improper methods of pursuing wealth. Alas!
Drngsc: Why is anyone worried about collecting data and polls, as long as they are properly conducted in an impartial manner?
No one disputes the appointment of village heads and kampung heads when some villages have a predominance of one race, with minorities of other races.
Let us conduct surveys, polls, and mayoral elections so that the best leader can be elected and made answerable to the people of Kuala Lumpur.
What is wrong with that, especially when we believe in an electoral system of government? We are all Malaysians. May a true Malaysian win.
Cheng Sai Fah: It is interesting that Selangor PAS Youth gave a measured response to the mayoral election issue. I have long harboured the hope that PAS and DAP can strike a compromise to collaborate outside PAS-governed states.
Selangor could be a good start. A PAS-PKR-DAP alliance would be a formidable coalition.
As for mayoral candidates, former economy minister Rafizi Ramli and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin would be good choices with broad support. Let a new generation of young leaders surface. - Mkini
