A coalition of NGOs plans to rally in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday (Feb 7) to pressure authorities to act against illegal houses of worship.
Malaysiakini learnt that Muslim preacher Zamri Vinoth, as the Anti-Illegal Houses of Worship Movement coordinator, has submitted a notice to the Dang Wangi police today informing the authority of their demonstration plan.
When contacted, Zamri (above) confirmed the matter, saying that the peaceful protest will be held at the area near the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur, starting at 8pm and involving some 141 NGOs.
"The objective of this gathering is to ensure that the law is enforced. Those who commit the crimes of trespassing and illegally constructing houses of worship must be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
"This rally is organised because such activities have been ongoing for so many years. The number of illegal houses of worship is increasing every year,” he said.
"But those who committed this activity are not charged in court, instead they are given compensation and replacement land.
"There is no ending... For how long? These people are the ones who should be paying the compensation, not the other way around," he added.
No relation to Modi visit
Dang Wangi district police chief Sazalee Adam confirmed they have received the notice from the organiser.

Zamri was also asked if the rally was planned to coincide with a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim this weekend.
The preacher, however, denied that it had anything to do with the diplomatic event.
"The date was a coincidence, and our rally is planned for 8pm in front of Sogo," he said. - Mkini
