Takiyuddin: PN to hold meeting on Feb 22, decide on new PN chief

A Perikatan Nasional extraordinary meeting will be held on Feb 22 at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, said coalition deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

He said leaders of the four component parties will convene at 3pm, following the conclusion of a PAS supreme council meeting.

“This extraordinary meeting will be convened in accordance with the coalition’s constitution, which permits such a meeting when at least half of the key leadership of the member parties agree.

“So far, all parties, including Bersatu, have agreed,” Takiyuddin (above) told reporters in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, after attending a Chinese New Year celebration, according to Bernama.

Commenting further, Takiyuddin said the meeting's agenda will focus on two main matters, namely approving the resignation of the PN chairperson and subsequently appointing a new chief.

He also said the issue of appointing a new parliamentary opposition leader is not on the official agenda of the meeting.

Earlier today, Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said PN is expected to discuss on its new parliamentary opposition leader in its next meeting following Hamzah Zainudin’s sacking from Bersatu.

Met by reporters at Gerakan’s Chinese New Year open house, Faizal claimed the candidate to replace Hamzah will be decided among PN component parties, in a meeting scheduled on Feb 22.

“It would be better if we could make a decision at the PN supreme council meeting that we will be holding soon.

“We will, of course, hold a meeting among the presidents of the component parties, and the PN supreme council will determine those matters,” said Faizal when asked to comment on speculation that Putrajaya MP Radzi Jidin and Takiyuddin were among candidates being considered for the post.

On whether Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin should become the opposition leader, Faizal said, “Personally, we are very open ... we cooperate as component parties, and we respect whatever decision made by the majority of the supreme council members.”

Political developments in and out of Bersatu eventually led to Muhyiddin’s purge against Hamzah and 16 others last week, while Takiyuddin has so far insisted that PAS will not take any sides.

Following the Larut MP’s sacking, both Faizal and Radzi have been named acting Bersatu deputy presidents.

On Feb 14, Hamzah claimed to have the majority support among Bersatu MPs with backing from 19 out of 25 lawmakers, including party vice-president and Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee, as well as Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

For the record, PN is also left leaderless following Muhyiddin’s resignation on Jan 1. Takiyuddin had previously said that the matter would be discussed and resolved in its supreme council meeting.

‘I will abide by party’s decision’

On a related matter, PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar told reporters today that he will comply with any decision made by the party leadership.

The Terengganu menteri besar said this includes accepting an appointment as the new PN chairperson if he is chosen for the post.

“I don’t know (if my name has been nominated as Muhyiddin’s successor), and I am not a member of the PN supreme council. So, I don’t know.

“However, (if I am appointed as PN chairperson)…I am a party man, so whatever decision the party makes, I will abide by it,” he said.

Local media earlier in January reported on a photograph of a meeting between Muhyiddin and Samsuri, accompanied by the caption “Alhamdulillah, insya-Allah”, which fuelled speculation that the PAS professional was among the shortlisted candidates for the PN chairperson post.

The photo was uploaded on Facebook by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s political secretary, Syahir Sulaiman.

However, Syahir said the meeting between Muhyiddin and Samsuri was held with Hadi’s blessings.

Takiyuddin previously said the party already has a candidate for the next PN chairperson, who is a senior PAS leader from among its MPs. - Mkini
