'We're ready': Bersih answers Rafizi's call for anti-Azam demo

Electoral reform watchdog Bersih had expressed its readiness to mobilise a peaceful assembly against the MACC amid calls to reform the anti-corruption agency.

In a statement today, Bersih chairperson Faisal Aziz (above) said the group is open to collaborating with anyone willing to make the move, including former economy minister Rafizi Ramli, who has expressed intent on the matter.

“This is a major issue that requires a people’s movement to ensure that MACC is truly cleaned up.

“Bersih’s demand is clear: An independent investigation must be conducted, and the government must immediately implement the MACC reform agenda,” he said in a three-part posting on X.

The chairperson added that it will be meeting coalition partners soon to discuss details about the actions to be taken, including demonstrations.

However, Faisal did not mention whether Bersih will also be joining the demonstration slated to take place on Sunday.

Faisal was responding to media reports about Rafizi’s press conference earlier today, where the Pandan MP said he will write to Bersih to propose holding a peaceful rally to allow people to protest and express their concerns with the allegations involving MACC.

Rafizi said he would also rally Pakatan Harapan component parties to pressure Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to suspend MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki and launch an investigation into the allegations against him.

Rally on Sunday

Separately, another group - dubbed the #TangkapAzamBaki secretariat - has announced that a public protest will be held against Azam at 4pm on Sunday in response to the latest revelations against Azam.

The same group previously organised protests in 2022 to demand action against Azam, following another share ownership controversy involving Azam.

Rafizi has indicated that he will join the protest on Sunday.

Azam is facing renewed scrutiny following reports by Bloomberg and Malaysiakini detailing more of his shareholdings, which appear to exceed limits imposed on civil servants.

Bloomberg report also claimed he was aware of a “corporate mafia” network allegedly colluding with a MACC investigative unit known as “Section D”.

Azam has denied wrongdoing and said his transactions were properly declared to the Public Service Department, while the MACC said it would not entertain “malicious” foreign media.

Azam’s lawyers are now seeking RM100 million in damages from Bloomberg for the alleged harm to the MACC chief’s reputation and professional standing. - Mkini
