PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) has announced it will contest all 56 seats in Johor’s upcoming state election, setting up a possible three‑cornered fight with Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
Johor PN chairman Datuk Sahruddin Jamal emphasised the coalition’s strength, while deputy chairman Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said PN remains open to talks to avoid opposition clashes.
“PN’s strength in Johor should not be underestimated … as the coalition positions itself for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched state polls,” said Sahruddin, who is from Bersatu.
Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH also declared intentions to contest all seats, despite being federal allies but rivals in Johor.
PH stated it will contest all 56 seats in retaliation for the Johor Menteri Besar’s (MB) Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi statement that BN will not go into the state elections with an ally and will contest all the seats solo.
The election, due by mid‑2027, could be held as early as August or September. Currently, BN holds 40 seats, PH 12, PN three, and MUDA one.
The statement by the Johor MB later triggered a call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that he would call for early elections if the parties in the Madani government felt they had had enough. — Focus Malaysia
