Burst tyre suspected in crash that killed couple in Batu Pahat

BATU PAHAT: A burst tyre is believed to have caused a tar-laden lorry to crush an MPV, killing a husband and wife on Jalan Yong Peng-Muar.

Batu Pahat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the crash occurred while the MPV was travelling from Yong Peng towards Parit Sulong.

He said the lorry, travelling in the opposite direction, was believed to have lost control after one of its tyres burst before veering off course and crushing the MPV.

The MPV driver, Mohd Hardi Mohd Husin, 46, and his wife, Tengku Syafirana Tengku Abdullah, 44, suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Hardi sustained injuries to his head and both hands, as well as burns to several parts of his body. His wife suffered serious head and internal injuries, and burns.

Two other MPV passengers, the couple's 11-year-old adopted daughter and their 8-year-old son, sustained cuts, burns to their legs and head injuries.

The children were taken to Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail (HSNI) for treatment, he said in a statement.

Shahrulanuar said investigations were ongoing and the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. - NST
