The recent disclosure of Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and his family’s international portfolio of properties worth billions of ringgit has compelled Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) to form a unit to monitor anti-government blogs and websites.
In recent weeks several blogs have have gone to town with revealing insights into Taib and his family’s extensive business empire headed by his daughter Jamilah in Canada and their properties in England and Australia.
The blogs have also highlighted Taib's cronies’ businesses portfolio in Sarawak which ranges from construction of houses, roads (including repairs and maintenance) to dams, oil palm and timber concessions.
The blogs reported Taib as one of the richest men in Malaysia and worth several billions of ringgit.
Deputy chief minister Alfred Jabu Numpang, who is also a PBB deputy president, has also become a target of these blogs which revealed Jabu’s alleged involvement in oil palm plantations through his son, Rentap and their relatives.
The blogs have slammed Jabu for failing to help the Iban community in tackling poverty.
The Ibans are considered to be poorest community in the country. Sixty-percent of Sarawak population is reportedly living in poverty.
Among the most vocal blogs are Sarawak Report, Sarawak Headhunters, Sarawak Talk, Dayak Baru and Dayak Nation.
In announcing the unit’s formation, PBB youth wing’s information chief Abdul Aziz Adenan said that the unit would monitor all the blogs that are anti-government.
“The formation of the unit is timely and necessary in view of the big number of blogs and websites that are writing lies about the government,” he said.
He hoped the unit, under the party’s information and information technology bureau would be able to carry out its duty in disseminating information that could help the people to get clearer picture on issues on which facts are distorted by the opposition parties.
