Soi Lek slammed, PR's path to Putrajaya not dependent on hudud

Malaysia Chronicle

Pakatan Rakyat leaders castigated MCA president Chua Soi Lek for his “shallow” and “immoral” view of hudud law and "ignorance" of coalitional politics, urging him to brush up on his knowledge before he shot his mouth off and further disgraced his party.

They also reiterated that Pakatan’s path to Putrajaya did not depend on hudud - one of three branches of Islamic orSyariah law.

They also accused the Umno press of replaying the issue to help take the heat off Umno, which has come under heavy fire for its racist policies, while the MCA has been unable to make headway with the Chinese voters.

“Soi Lek has again demonstrated how shallow minded, immoral and totally ignorant he is on Islamic ideology and law. Pakatan’s path to Putrajaya does not depend onhudud. How shameful to have him as the president of MCA. When you have this sort of quality, no wonder the end is near for BN,” PAS central committee member Nizar Jamaluddin told Malaysia Chronicle.

Does MCA share Umno's stand on 30% Bumi target

PKR vice president Lee Boon Chye told Malaysia Chronicle that under Pakatan’s Common Policy Framework, PKR, DAP and PAS have all agreed on a common agenda of defending the existing Federal Constitution, and even issued a People’s Declaration.

All partners within the coalition were also free to pursue their own ideologies and aspirations, but decisions made by the coalition would be based on the CPF, Lee pointed out.

“We have said many times before but the Umno press keeps harping on it. PAS can implement hudud even without the approval of PKR and DAP if it gets two-thirds majority in Parliament on its own. This is its unchallengeable right and PKR and DAP do not dispute this at all,” said Lee.

“But if PAS does not have two-thirds, it will need support from PKR and DAP, and even then all three will need a combined two-thirds majority. Let's say they have but PKR and DAP do not agree with hudud, then PAS still cannot implement it. It is as simple as that and PAS does not dispute this either. It is part and parcel of the CPF and I think Malaysians know it by now because we have repeated it so many times. Only Umno, MCA and their media do not know. Neither does Chua Soi Lek.”

Proving his political prowess

MCA president Chua Soi Lek
The embattled MCA president may be trying to prove his political prowess after creating an embarrassing row with Umno, firstly over the use of the word Allah, and then with the 30 percent Bumiputera equity target.

In both incidents, he had to retreat and appease Umno after receiving a barrage of fire led by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali, who even made cat-calls about his scandal-plagued past and publicly called him a “sex-video actor”.

“Chua Soi Lek obviously does not understand coalition politics. Maybe this is because he does not allow MCA to hold different views from Umno – he can strut and preen for a few days but after that he has to bow low and kow-tow to Umno. He is a walking-talking disgrace,” Lee said.

"Malaysians would also like to ask him where is his stand on the 30 percent Bumiputera target now? What is MCA's stand on the New Economic Policy, scholarship quotas, open tenders? Also what is Umno's stand onhudud and Syariah? Does MCA and Umno agree on hudud and Syariah, do they have any common platform at all?

On Thursday, Chua accused DAP – which is MCA’s main rival for the Chinese vote – of being willing to sacrifice the Chinese community for power by agreeing to allow PAS to implement hudud. But in his haste to score political points, he stomped on Islam once again.

“It is an eye opener to all citizens in this country that PAS would never never give up on its Islamic agenda. So it is wrong to say why not we try to vote for them. It is wrong because it concerns the welfare of therakyat,” Chua was quoted as saying.
