Crack down on Net abusers, Najib tells MCMC

PEKAN – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been ordered to punish those who upload articles on the Internet insulting Islam.

"The MCMC has to act. I hope they act firmly in this matter. This is something which cannot be allowed (to continue)," said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The prime minister said everyone in the country should realise that sensitive content on websites could touch on the sensitivities of those affected.

"They should understand that websites do not give us total freedom to do anything, including insulting religions and individuals.

"We must use the alternative media responsibly," he told reporters when asked to comment on the inclination of irresponsible people to publish seditious statements and those insulting religion on their websites or social websites such as Facebook.

The prime minister said everyone should respect the country's laws and should not make statements which could hurt others, especially pertaining to religion.

He said the people of various races and religions in the country should realise that Malaysia had laws which protected the sanctity of Islam.

Earlier, Najib distributed "duit raya" (Aidilfitri cash donations) and tithes to more than 4,000 poor people and single mothers, among them non-Malays, in his Pekan parliamentary constituency.

Also present was his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

Speaking to reporters, Najib said he hoped that private firms and government-linked companies would also play an important role in helping the poor.

In Johor Baru, Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin advised undergraduates to exercise caution when using Facebook, saying they should not abuse the social tool.

Undergraduates should know the limits of Facebook usage, he told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri goodies donated by Bank Rakyat.

Of late, there have been cases of fake or unofficial Facebook accounts created under other people's names, and those affected include the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, Najib and MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek. - Bernama
