BN reps say no to amendments

Calling the emergency meeting a waste of time, opposition leader Satim Diman says BN reps will not back it.

SHAH ALAM: Selangor’s opposition reps from Barisan Nasional will not back the proposal to amend the state constitution.

Addressing the emergency State Legislative Assembly meeting here, opposition leader Satim Diman also described the issue as a waste of time.

He said that Mohd Khusrin Munawi’s appointment as the new state secretary is not an issue which requires an emergency meeting.

“We, the 20 BN state assemblymen and one independent state assemblyman (Badrul Hisham Abdullah), will not support these amendments to the state constitution,” he added.

According to Satim, the proposed amendments also go against the Federal Constitution.

The Pakatan Rakyat-controlled state government objected to Khusrin’s appointment because Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim was not consulted.

Following this, the emergency meeting was called to amend the constitution to restore the power of appointment of three top civil servants in Selangor to the state and sultan.

Meanwhile, Satim also accused the state government of being hypocritical and insincere.

He said the previous BN state governments never set aside the Sultan since the 1993 constitutional amendments, which limited the power of the monarchy and removed their legal immunity.

However, when asked how the proposed amendments will go against the Federal Constitution, Satim was unable to answer.

Satim also made an issue out of Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching’s speech at the Surau Al-Huda in Kajang Central, and her aerobics exercise at the Taman Cheras Jaya mosque compound in Balakong last year.

He also asked why the state has to hire two private legal advisers to draw up the amendments, instead of using the state legal adviser at hand.

The opposition leader also attacked Selangor executive councillor and Pandamaran assemblyman Ronnie Liu over his opposition to the liquor ban.

Pakatan is three seats short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass the amendments. - FMT
