Some 40 years ago a typical UMNO minded man authored a novel, spitting venoms of racism after the seeming loss of power by the Malays to the Chinese post May 13 1969 deadly riot! The book was a cold vengeance over the alleged loss of power by the Alliance to the Chinese!
Going through the important events in history, from pre-independence to post-independence era of Malaya and later Malaysia, we can readily understand the mental state of the author and the urge he might have had to pen such a venomous book! Such important events include 1963 Singapore state elections in which all UMNO-backed Malay candidates in Singapore Alliance Party (a coalition of political parties that contested several elections in Singapore, heavily backed by United Malays National Organisation or UMNO) lost to Lee Kuan Yew’s PAP (People’s Action Party) in the elections, the strained race relations along communal lines that led to 1964 Race Riots in Singapore, expulsion of Singapore from Malaysia on 9 August 1965, 1969 General Elections in Malaysia that saw the Alliance losing over half of the popular vote with The Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP), the Malaysian version of Lee Kuan Yew’s PAP, making substantial gains in the election after campaigning against the Bumiputeras causing the Alliance to lose control of Kelantan, Perak and Penang, Tun Mahathir losing his own parliamentary seat in the same election, Mahathir’s expulsion from the party, Tun Razak succeeding Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1970 with a stronger assertion of UMNO leadership in the Alliance comprising MCA and MIC, and also the announcement of the New Economic Policy (NEP) by Tun Razak government in 1971 targeting a 30 percent Malay share of the country’s economy by 1990 ….!
Just about everything sound so familiar with whatever is happening in Malaysian politics now! The 2008 General Election, the loss of four and later three states including Penang, the strained race relations, UMNO PERKASA urging the Malays to come together to protect their land from “pendatang”… the whole thing just looks like history is repeating itself in Malaysia. One wonders then, does that simply mean that after nearly 54 years of independence, Malaysia has not improved even an iota in terms of race relations, Malay economy and “pendatangs” loyalty to the country? How can we be mingling with the same issues in history over 54 years when all other countries have forged ahead and made remarkable achievements! One thing is evident, all these events in the nation’s history, in one way or another is connected to UMNO…..! It seems, whenever UMNO is on the brink of losing its political power, social unrest is staged for UMNO to continue its clutches on power in the guise of emergency ruling!
And today, after 54 years of independence and after thousands of books have been written and published in the country, UMNO could only find this one damn book to propagate unity and 1 Malaysia crap that no one gives a damn about! What is UMNO’s intention in insisting on the damn book Interlok which is an excellent example of an imperfect masterpiece of a literary work??? How could Indians accept a book that so insults them, diminish their self-esteem and challenges the core of their dignity? The many disparaging lines in the book are damaging enough to reduce the Indians in the country into a piece of trash!
And today, for defending their dignity and self-pride against a book that was deliberately selected by RACIST UMNO to infect the millions of young Malay minds in schools with the virus of racism and hatred and bastardize the Indian community through demeaning portrayals of the Indian characters throughout, the freaking police force is at its best, exercising its bias execution of duties against the Indians totally undermining the constitution of the country!
What was the need to arrest 72 armless innocent civilians including women and school going children from a car convoy last week? Since when having a forum on racism and a damn book is a crime? Since when participating in a car convoy, sending text messages on mobile phones, standing in front of police headquarters, wearing orange T-Shirts, enquiring the police to explain their acts against the innocent public, driving on the road like any other civilian are considered crime? The police, since last week have been cracking down on Hindraf/HRP members, supporters and well wishers and arrested them merely for the above mentioned activities! What a mockery of law and order by the police!
What rights do the police have to threaten the innocent public of seven days imprisonment for refusing to take off the shirts they were wearing! Why throw the innocent armless people into lock-ups for participating in a car convoy or forum? What is the biggest crime affecting Malaysia now? Wearing orange T-Shirts, sending texts messages inviting people to gatherings and talks, giving permission to use a hall or office space for a forum and organizing forums about a damn book??? The heavy presence of the police with Black Maria and the strike force truly created a war zone atmosphere!!! What is really UMNO battling??? One damn book causing so much havoc in the country just as one bloody UMNO destroys the country!!!
And what do the police do when they can’t answer Hindraf/HRP’s intelligent questions to explain their unlawful actions in the letter and spirit of law? The freaking police will push them hard away from the watchful eyes of the public and brutally chuck them into the police lock-ups as you can witness in the many videos of the police arrests of the Hindraf/HRP members and supporters in Kulim, Simpang Empat, Seremban, Batu Caves and elsewhere nationwide last week and this week! Are the police above the law and untouchable (in the words of Interlok- PARIAH!)??? Even here is it NOT hard to join the dots and figure out why the police prefer shooting dead the alleged Indian criminals than catching them alive and prosecuting them in the court of law. Perhaps there is no law to prosecute the alleged criminals or the police are not following any law!!! When the police can’t fight the Hindraf/HRP intellectually, they use violence and excessive force against these defenseless and vulnerable seekers of justice!
UMNO had survived, is surviving and will continue to survive ONLY by instilling fear, intimidating, harassing, torturing and finally murdering and silencing any voices of dissent! This is exactly what UMNO has been doing all this while, doing it right now and there is no sign that they will learn or stop this barbarism in future should it continue to rule the country beyond the 13th General Election! INTERLOK serves as the best weapon for the purpose!!! It will be an unmitigated danger and irreparable damage to let UMNO RACISTS continue ruling the country beyond the 13th general election!!!
To end the police brutality and UMNO’s tyranny UMNO needs to be buried by the next general election. Today, in Malaysia, everywhere we hear cries of RACISM! Everyone cries RACISM! Nonetheless, it is Hindraf/HRP alone fighting it tooth and nail!!! Perhaps, what Hindraf/HRP claims all this while that Indians are the worst victims of UMNO RACISM is after all true to the core hence the silence from the rest of the communities!
If at all the People’s March in Solidarity against UMNO RACISM on 27 February 2011 indeed saw Malaysians from all walks of life, and not just Indians, joining the march hand in hand in support of the cause, I would be pleased to find myself wrong in thinking that Indians are the only affected community of UMNO RACISM! May I expect the unexpected remains to be seen on 27 February 2011!
