Kit Siang says Muhyiddin inciting racism

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — DAP’s Lim Kit Siang condemned today political foe Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for irresponsibly inciting racism at the Umno general assembly last night by portraying the opposition party as anti-Islam and anti-Malay.

Suggesting that Muhyiddin was up to mischief, Lim dared the deputy prime minister to back up his allegation that the DAP wants to turn Malaysia, which is a constitutional monarchy, into a republic.

“Muhyiddin’s accusations against the DAP as anti-Islam and anti-Malay are false, baseless and pure unadulterated lies,” the DAP advisor said.

He was referring to the Umno deputy president’s speech in front of Umno’s Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings yesterday, and noted Muhyiddin had accused the DAP of suggesting the prime minister’s position be chosen solely on the results of national polls and without taking into account the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s input.

Labelling it “the mother of all lies, falsehoods and racism”, Lim said the Umno leader’s words were despicable, incendiary and seditious.

The Ipoh-Timur MP insisted his party was fully-committed to improving the lives of all Malaysians regardless of their racial or religious background.

The veteran lawmaker said he had declared in his maiden speech in Parliament on February 23, 1971 that the DAP was in full support of Malaysia’s adoption of the constitutional monarchy system.

“We do not and have not questioned the sovereignty of Rulers,” Lim stressed in his statement today.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin urged some 4,000 Umno delegates to defend the Malay race, culture and royal institutions from the three-party opposition Pakatan Rakyat pact, in particular the DAP.
