Umno makes Kadir Sheikh exit official

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 — Umno has officially accepted Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir’s resignation from party, Bernama Online reported Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor as saying today.

“We have received the letter and the management had accepted it,” the Umno secretary-general was quoted as saying. The notice was sent via fax and email.

On March 19, former information minister and Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Abdul Kadir resigned as an Umno member after 56 years in the ruling party.

Abdul Kadir made headlines in January when he accused Umno of handing out between RM200 and RM1,000 to voters in previous elections in exchange for votes.

The former Umno supreme council member, however, denied personally using the “bomb” strategy to win elections in Kulim-Bandar Baharu where he was MP for 30 years from 1978.

Abdul Kadir’s criticism had previously prompted Adnan to question the former’s continued membership in Umno despite the apparent disenchantment.

“If he (Abdul Kadir) feels Umno is not right, why hasn’t he left the party?” Adnan was quoted as saying by Bernama Online here.

Adnan added that Abdul Kadir may face disciplinary action if the statements could be linked directly to him, but the latter’s resignation has now pre-empted any impending punishment.
