UMNO defends EC duo amid calls for resignation

UMNO defends EC duo amid calls for resignation
UMNO secretary general Tengku Adnan Mansor is seeing nothing wrong in Election Commission's top duo's membership in the party.
“It is not necessary that becoming UMNO members will lead them to easily betray the trust given to them (in handling EC),” he told Malay daily Sinar Harian.
EC chief Abdul Aziz Mustafa and deputy Wan Ahmad Wan Omar admitted that they were UMNO members as revealed by PKR secretary general Saiduddin Nasution. Both however said that they were inactive members, with Aziz claiming he had been recruited during his youth without his consent.
Saifuddin earlier revealed that Aziz bears UMNO membership number 113804 and belongs to the party's Sri Ampang Baru branch in the Lembah Jaya, Ampang constituency.
His deputy Wan Ahmad Wan Omar meanwhile is registered at Kubang Bunggor branch in Pasir Mas, Kelantan bearing the membership number 2374564.
“Enjoying public confidence is the main criterion in forming the EC. Anyone sitting in the Commission must be free, unbiased and non-partisan.
"The chief and deputy have failed this basic test when it is proven that they are both UMNO members,” said Saifuddin.
He also disputed the argument by the duo that their UMNO membership would not undermine the political neutrality required in EC.
“We think the best way for them to help to restore public confidence in the EC, especially at the time when Malaysia faces its 13th general election, is through their immediate resignation,” stressed the Machang member of parliament.
The rally for electoral reforms which will take place in the capital tomorrow is among others demanding the resignation of EC officials, citing their failure to set right electoral abuses.
