KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 ― Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak led thousands of party members today in vowing to do everything in their power to win over the hearts and minds of Malaysians ahead of a general election that he said will be “extraordinary”.
“We will compete for every vote, we will work to win the confidence of every single Malaysian citizen, we will knock on every door, we shall open every pathway to hope,” he said in his final presidential briefing to Umno delegates before the party heads for polls next year.
Najib told the party’s over three million members to take cognisance of Umno’s past mistakes when preparing to face the ballot, and urged them to be “sincere” when serving Malaysians.
He pointed out that as more than 95 per cent of Malaysians today were born after Umno’s formation, the party could not rely on reminding voters of past experiences in order to win them over.
“Above all, Malaysians today have grown smarter in being able to distinguish between what is real and what is not.
“In this context, I would like to urge, be a party leader who works hard for the people, one with integrity and humility.
“Be sincere when serving the people, hold true to the words of religious scholars, that the good will eventually prevail,” he said.
