Ex-CCID chief files suit against former IGP

Retired Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Ramli Yusuff filed a defamation suit on Tuesday against former Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan for what the latter had said last December at a press conference which had allegedly had tarred his reputation.

The suit was filed at the Shah Alam High Court registry through the firm of Vin Partnerships.

Ramli, in his statement of claim, alleged that what Musa had said at a press conference with MyWatch, an anti-crime watchdog, had contained defamatory, slanderous and lies as reported by the newsportal Free Malaysia Today (FMT) and a video clip also carried on the website.

The statements, he alleged, portrayed him as dishonest, corrupted, had committed an offence punishable by a prison term and had fabricated and made false declarations regarding his assets and accumulated wealth.

Ramli claimed the words were vexatious, bereft of the truth, fallacious and totally uncalled for.
They were also deliberate, malicious, and aimed at lowering Ramli's esteem in the eyes of the public as well expose him to ridicule, scorn and public hatred.

The former senior police officer said the statements were calculated to malign, and defame him, to seriously injure his good name and reputation.

They, he added, were defamatory and issued with malicious intent despite being investigated by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission, and acquitted of all charges.

Ramli said he had made 35 asset declarations in his career as a police officer, all approved by the deputy IGPs, IGPs and the Home Affairs Ministry.

Unspecified amount of relief sought

He claimed that Musa had deliberately raised the matter at the press conference for publication in various news organisations, including FMT.

Musa's actions, Ramli said were aimed at instigating public anger and ill will against him, which distorted the truth , calculated to gain political advantage or for cheap publicity.

NONEThe former CCID director is seeking an unspecified amount of general, aggravated and exemplary damages.

He is also seeking an injunction to restrain Musa (left) from repeating or cause the publication of those defamatory words again.

It was previously reported that the two police top guns were embroiled in a dispute known as the Copgate affair that involved Musa and allegedly attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail.

It also saw Ramli being labelled the RM27 million cop, charged for allegedly non-declaration of assets, and violating the laws barring civil servants from being involved in private business.

The former CCID director had previously said that he had beencleared by a nine-judge panel of a total of five charges in Kuala Lumpur and Sabah.

Ramli was entitled to RM753,000 in gratuity which had been withheld suspended for three months in the wake of those charges, before he was due to retire in 2007.
