Amid calls by top UMNO leaders not to contest the party's top two posts at the upcoming general assembly, Wanita UMNO however has decided to buck the trend.
Its embattled chief Shahrizat Jalil will now see her position challenged by Pengerang member of parliament Azalina Othman.
According to MCA's The Star, Azalina confirmed she would be gunning for the Wanita UMNO top post.
“Yes, I am interested in contesting. I've decided,” she was quoted as saying.
Azalina believed that she had the numbers judging from the support she received during her ‘darkest hour’ in UMNO.
The former Puteri UMNO leader's political career had been uncertain since Najib Razak took over as prime minister in 2009.
Her stint in the Youth and Sports ministry, and later in the Tourism ministry under former PM Abdullah Badawi, were marred by several controversies, including the expensive plan to turn the rubber research centre in Brickendonbury, UK into a high-performance sport centre for Malaysian athletes.
She was also at the centre of the controversy involving Pempena, a subsidiary of the Tourism ministry.
Shahrizat, on the other hand, is notorious for her involvement in the National Feedlot Corporation scandal. It later cost her cabinet post and senatorship, as well as not being selected as BN's candidate in the recent general election.
